Review: The Square Root of Summer by Harriet Reuter Hapgood

This is what it means to love someone. This is what it means to grieve someone. It's a little bit like a black hole. It's a little bit like infinity.

Gottie H. Oppenheimer is losing time. Literally. When the fabric of the universe around her seaside town begins to fray, she's hurtled through wormholes to her past:

To last summer, when her grandfather Grey died. To the afternoon she fell in love with Jason, who wouldn't even hold her hand at the funeral. To the day her best friend Thomas moved away and left her behind with a scar on her hand and a black hole in her memory.

Although Grey is still gone, Jason and Thomas are back, and Gottie's past, present, and future are about to collide—and someone's heart is about to be broken.

If I could describe this book in one word it would be: quirky!!

Gottie is grieving over her granddad Grey who has passed away a little less then a year ago. She is also still hung up on her secret ex boyfriend. And on top of that her best friend is returning from Canada after being away for years. Her almost first kiss, the boy who promised to write and never did.

While the anniversary of Greys death is getting closer Gottie finds his diaries and finds herself traveling back in time. Reliving moments with her secret ex Jason. But even those memories keep getting closer to Greys death.

Its all a bit quirky here, Gottie is great at maths and equations. She is forever looking for the right scientific explanation for what is happening to her. Time travel, wormholes, black holes. I could almost understand it all.

But this is so much more then science. Its about grieve, love and friendship. Gottie finds herself struggling with life while she is not ready to let go of her granddad just yet.

Gottie is a typical young lady making the sort of mistakes we could all be making. Be it with her friends or with boys. But she gets the chance to see it all again and learn from her mistakes. Will she be able to hold on to her friends?

Thomas, Gotties best friend, was my favourite character, but what is Thomas hiding? And why did he really come back?

This was a really cute, lovely and easy read. I really enjoyed it.
